| Contents | The essential content of the course consists in the study of tourism, understood as a social phenomenon, investigated in the light of the main sociological theories that over time have highlighted new and different forms of relationship between tourism and society. Consequently, at the center of the investigation is the individual, understood as a social actor who experiences different forms of interaction with tourism systems. In particular, the theoretical configurations aimed at describing and problematizing the methods of entry, stay, exit and return to the places that are the object and destination of the tourist's choices will be modeled. |
| Textbook and course materials | A. Savelli, Sociologia del Turismo, Hoepli, Milano, 2012. |
| Course objectives | The course aims to provide basic knowledge, cognitive tools and research methodologies useful for developing the ability to understand the tourist phenomenon as a social dynamic articulated in different components (the traveler, the journey, the social system of departure and reception). Further acquisitions concern the role that in the tourist phenomenon and, in general, in every form of movement of the actor in the social space, assume the cultural and communicative processes elaborated by authors of different nature. Further insights will focus on the analysis of communicative acts that, from different perspectives (commercial advertising, websites, novels and films), lend themselves to a sociological reading of travel and the relationships that the actors establish with the reference systems. Therefore, the course is aimed at building a training course at the end of which the student will be able to analytically break down the components of the tourist phenomenon to draw up a sort of sociological identity card of the traveler and a 'technical sheet' of the system. At the end of the course, the student must possess knowledge and understanding skills useful for building a conceptual and social map through which to describe, explain, predict and solve critical issues related to individual decisions and supply or deficiencies found in tourism systems. |
| Prerequisites | At the beginning of the course the student must have a good level of general education such as to be able to face the study of social problems in an Italian and international context. |
| Teaching methods | Teaching is divided into lectures (80% of scheduled hours) and practical activities (20% of scheduled hours), such as laboratories, exercises, seminars, simulations, group work, and the preparation of assignments and/or research. These activities aim to consolidate the understanding of the concepts covered in class and the ability to apply this knowledge. |
| Assessment methods | The exam is oral, with a grade out of 30. The oral exam consists of an interview on the exam syllabus, focusing on at least three questions. The Course provides a final exam on the full programme of coursework. The evaluation of the candidate will be held through an oral interview for which the score is expressed in grades from 1 to 30. The minimum score to pass the exam is 18/30. To get a passing grade the student has to demonstrate that he/she has reached the "Training objectives", i.e. the student must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the exam programme. The oral test consists of an interview made up of minimum four questions about the specific topics of the program and aims to verify the knowledge acquired by the student. |
